Productive vs. Busy

February 16, 2008

bumblebeerex_468x362.jpg

This is one of my largest areas of “time wasters”. I will catch myself busily working on something that does not have any application to shortening the gaps between the achievement of my goals and work. I can put in hours and hours on things that either someone else can do (not being prideful, just making a point) or things that have neutral impact on my life.

Time is something that is increasing in value as I age. The seeming indefatigability of youth is catching up to me – I know I’m not old, but the term “old” is relative anyway. I want to do things that get me closer to accomplishing the things I want people to learn from and talk about when I’m gone.

We can laugh about using the terms “legacy” and “heritage”, but each day we either deposit, withdraw or ignore the balance we will leave behind. Passion is great, and something that I find increasing as the days go by, but passion without focus will just make me tired at the end of the day. Passion with focus will bring me closer to my desired achievements and give purpose to my days.

When I was growing up, people used the axiom, “busy as a bee”, it worked because it rhymed – I think bees are far more productive than just being busy. I do concede, however, that “productive as a bee” doesn’t quite have the same ring.

“Everything Popular Is Wrong”

February 15, 2008

oscar-wilde-pic.jpg

Oscar Wilde is quoted as saying, “Everything popular is wrong”. I tend to think he was correct. The context we find ourselves in today’s world exists on the ebb and flow of popular thought. Information overload has helped to destabilize the prediction process of the masses. Where once we could statistically predict certain outcomes of certain situations, now we are hit with a sharp shift in the population’s attitude about a given issue or occurrence.

We saw early on in the Presidential primary coverage that exit polls and projected winners were going to be far more difficult to decipher than had previously been thought.

It seemed the country’s collective psyche was transforming right in front of us. Things we had been told were so by statisticians were proven wrong, and in an instant our perception of candidates and their ability to lead changed. Those who were the front runners and the supposed party candidates suddenly found themselves gasping for footing amid a flood of popular anxiety.

Is “everything popular…wrong”? In many cases it seems so, but we cannot be against something because everyone else is for it. We must be people who examine issues and look at the substance of a debate. We must weigh the information we have in front of us objectively.

Will we make mistakes? Most certainly, but they will be mistakes made not because we did not have courage enough to pour over decisions, but mistakes made for incomplete or inaccurate information. Our decisions define us as both people and as a nation. When we choose based on what we ourselves know and believe, we step into a realm that has been paved for us and trod over by many generations before. If we choose based on the tabloids, we take the sacrifice of those generations for granted and cheapen the cause of liberty in our age.

The Gift of Hope

February 13, 2008

A lot has been said recently about the topic of Hope. It has been used by political figures to define either what they feel American people want or what American people need. I think the answer is both – we want and need hope. The human being was designed to live in an atmosphere of hope; to constantly be looking for the good positive and beautiful. The resource of this hope is not, I believe, a political figure. Although a person can embody a feeling of Hope, the action of believing and working for Hope lies in the person themselves.

Once Hope has been born within a person, there is not much that can cause it to go and leave. Hope is infectious and contagious – it passes from person to person with ease. Because we have a desire for it – Hope comes to us like a magnet.

It is true that Hope is a gift. A gift can be given and received; Hope has to be either given or received, if it is not it is simply belief. Hope is much stronger than belief; Hope goes beyond mere belief. Hope invades the person and pushes them to think further and do more. Hope energizes and invigorates a person to greatness and great things.

Hope lets us see how things can be and instead of dreaming with a big smile on our face, we are enable to make it happen.

May your day be filled with a passionate Hope both for yourself and for those around you.

What’s Wrong With the Ego?

February 11, 2008

it_s_all_about_me_mug.jpg

The question of the positive or negative aspects of ego could result in conversations lasting for years. The interest in and the commentary on the ego could also fill a library. The essence of this post is to make the point that in one great aspect, the ego is responsible for dividing our interests and progression in the path toward God.

Most religious teaching talks of severing the relationship with the ego: literally dying to its needs. Only then, it is taught, can we truly find God; only then can we be unified with our fellow man.

I offer another thought – the ego has a purpose and place in the whole person. I would even go so far as to say that in trying to kill off the ego, you are trying to kill off yourself. It is true that the ego has a powerful pull on the direction, interests and ultimate actions of the person, but like all human functions it can be harnessed to produce positive growth for the whole being. Instead of using great amounts of energy to conquer the ego, use that energy to define and enhance its positive effects.

For me, we are a projection of our ego, so that when we diminish it’s life, we diminish our own vitality. However, when we seek to examine and augment the impact of our ego, we are, in fact, increasing the ego’s ability to combine and unify with others.

Practically Letting Go: Part 2

February 4, 2008

Hope Part 1 helped some of you guys out. Here’s another tried and true method to my madness, and a way to free up unproductive time.

Dialogue is important in what I do. The decisions that I make are made using information from multiple sources. I talk to people, read books, listen and watch various media outlets in order to formulate a strategy for visual and content success. Each series requires individual attention and frequent adjustment. The point is – I have a lot to do in a short amount of time. This is coupled by the fact that the process is repeated every 4-5 weeks.

One of the greatest Idea Assets that I have found is to: NOT GET INVOLVED IN MEANINGLESS DIALOGUE. I put that in caps to arrest your attention. This is critical. If you are like me, people like to talk to you; and you like to talk to them. Problems arise when you need to focus on the Big Idea.

There are people in all of our lives who simply want to talk. They don’t offer any additional input into a situation, they don’t help you make a decision, and they certainly don’t contribute to a completion of a project. Love these people, but don’t get involved in meaningless dialogue with them. Be straightforward and firm. Your time belongs to you, and only you can give it away.

Utilize this one principle and loads of time will open up for you.

Practically letting go Part 1

February 3, 2008

There are things tha ti have learned that have helped me to become somewhat streamlined in my approach to life. Many times I will bog back down into the mire of life, but when I remeber these few things I quickly regain ground and experience personal sucess and satisfaction.

A big practice for me is to not check email in the morning. I know you were expaecting a more spiritual exercise, but listen, this really works. When I come into work I do not first go to my computer and check email. Instead I check it at noon and again at 4pm. Most of the time this is sufficient. If more is needed it usually means I haven’t communicated effectivly to someone.

So try this for a week and see if it doesn’t add to you time and free up happier feelings for a better day.

becoming

January 31, 2008

Many times we live our lives with a focus on the “present”. We live in the “now”. I think that it is important to have a balanced approach to the life we live. I also think that in turning out focus to the present we tend to lose sight of the future. I am most definitly a futurist. I like to poder and think about the things that are coming. I love to examine current culture and try to determine where trends are going. In this effort I have been successful, but have also missed some big things.

The point of today is simply to look ahead and have a plan. We need to decide what we want to “become” and then plan our “becoming”. If we live in a happenstance way, we risk missing some of the wonderful experiences of life. To have a plan, execute it and see the things that once only existed in your mind suddenly be the things you are seeing with your eyes is a great moment. The pleasure and confidence that are created when we plan, pursue and produce an idea can only be understood in the “doing”.

These are the experiences and feelings God desires us to entertain and feel. In the creation of a plan and its execution, we join with the Creator and can, in a small way, experience with him the joy of creativity. Don’t say you can’t do it, start today to make your tomorrows “become” and not just “happen”.

shift

January 29, 2008

I don’t know about you, but it seems to me that in every facet of life there is a shifting going on. Most obvious is the shift we see in the political arena. It is felt not simply because of the different issues being discussed, but with the way in which the dicussions are being held. I completely agree that it is a wonderful time to be alive. The global events that we are seeing are happening at a different rate and with different outcomes than would have occured even a few years ago.

Whether we agree on the issues like global warming, economy, and war, the one thing we can all admit is that there is a shift. A shift both in thinking and execution; in action and effect; in intent and purpose. Like never before we have a great opportunity to utilize our personal influence and create great change with small actions. When we live each day with purpose and passion we effect each day.

Good Lord

January 25, 2008

caesar.jpg

There is more to God being in charge than just Jesus sitting on a throne. It is true that He is the Magnificent King, but what did it mean then – when it was written? To say “Lord”, was a political statement. One for a deity[Jesus] and against Caesar, the accepted deity of the time, who also happened to be king and supreme ruler. When the followers of Jesus proclaimed that he was “Lord”, they were tempting fate and their future as living people. To go against Caesar was to put your life in jeopardy.

An interesting side note is that Jesus says, that not all those who say “Lord, Lord” will enter into the Kingdom [there it is again]. In essence saying that those who put themselves at personal risk by aligning with Jesus aren’t guaranteed a free pass. This idea makes the concept of The Kingdom even a greater one that needs discovery. It in fact makes The Kingdom….greater.

Everything Is Beautiful !?!

January 22, 2008

salon-of-beauty.jpg

Have you ever had someone come up to you and you see that they are beaming with happiness and it ticks you off? They have met you in a moment where you were reveling in your own disgust with the world. You were happy being sad and frustrated, but they came anyway. A perfectly great opportunity to wallow in self-pity has been ruined.

Maybe it’s just me, but during those times of personal loathing of everything around me, the last thing I want to see is someone actually happy – and not just happy, really full of joy – beaming in the beauty of everything that is.

I thought I had it nailed down. I would quote the “everything has a season to mourn and cry…yada yada, yada…”, but I saw something that struck me as odd. Odd because we tend to have scriptures we quote almost out of habit. This time I found out I had been wrong.

Ecclesiasties 3:11 – “He has made everything beautiful, in its time.” How is it that I had missed that for soooo long? What are the real implications to this? Could it be that even those things that I don’t want to experience are beautiful at some point? I think so. When I look at my life, the moments that have become “beautiful” have been those that were, at the time, the most difficult to walk through. It was because of their hardness that they were able to etch out a part of me. Though excruciating at the time, the result was – I have to say it – Beautiful.

Isaiah 52 says, “How beautiful….are the feet of those who bring good news.”  I wonder if the pain that sometimes comes from “bringing the good news” often result in beauty, but that beauty is left unseen.  Today, look at those things that have brought pain, and view them with new eyes and instead of pain see the beauty.
