Why do we still have big questions?

Kevin Kelly is by far one of my top ten people alive right now. His ability to see and understand the complex world of evolving science and then express that understanding in simple terms is one of his many gifts. The following is a portion of an article about the big questions.

“Information is expanding 10 times faster than any product on this planet – manufactured or natural. According to Hal Varian, an economist at UC Berkeley and a consultant to Google, worldwide information is increasing at 66 percent per year – approaching the rate of Moore’s law – while the most prolific manufactured stuff – paper, let’s say, or steel – averages only as much as 7 percent annually. By this rough metric, knowledge is growing exponentially.

. A decade ago, author John Horgan interviewed prestigious scientists in many fields and concluded in his book The End of Science that all the big questions had been answered. The world of science has been roughly mapped and all that remains now is to color in the details.

So why do we still have so many unanswered questions? Take the current state of physics: We don’t know what 96 percent of the universe is made of. We call it “dark matter,” a euphemism for our ignorance.

Yet it is also clear that we know far more about the universe than we did a century ago, and we have put this understanding to practical use – in consumer goods like GPS receivers and iPods, in medical devices like MRI scanners, and in engineered materials like photovoltaic cells and carbon nanotubes. Our steady and beneficial progress in knowledge comes from steady and beneficial progress in tools and technology. Telescopes, microscopes, fluoroscopes, and oscilloscopes allow us to see in new ways and to know more about the universe.
The paradox of science is that every answer breeds at least two new questions. More answers mean even more questions, expanding not only what we know but also what we don’t know. Every new tool for looking farther or deeper or smaller allows us to spy into our ignorance. Future technologies such as artificial intelligence, controlled fusion, and quantum computing (to name a few on the near horizon) will change the world – that means the biggest questions have yet to be asked.
Kevin Kelly, author of Cool Tools

When Kevin is talking about every question breeding two more, I think the application can be found in the church. If we are wiling to begin to ask questions (which some do not believe we can/should), the result is more and more questions, but also a more distilled and refined view of religious ideas long left unchallenged and untouched. Unless we embrace the undulation of the living Journey, we will be destined to be included with those who said automobiles, television, personal computers and the internet were a fad.

Ask. Search. Seek. Question. At the end of these actions is real life!

Viva la Vida

Had to make mention of this album by Coldplay. It is a wonderful thing when artists see the need to reach and stretch; it’s even better when they do it with confidence and flair. In their latest album, Coldplay delivers both an experimental approach and a homage back to their distinctive pop money-making formula sound.

This album is thought provoking and entertaining, but on a different level than previous attempts. Chris Martin told Billboard in April that the band “wasn’t afraid to do anything.” From African beats and hand-clapping to a nearly instrumental on track one, they succeeded in the “anything” department.

Loved the title track and “Lost”. “Violent Hill” also has to be a favorite. This is a great marker to let all of us know the Coldplay will be around for a long time.

Viva la Coldplay!

Vacation State of Mind

Sunday nights I’m involved in a conversation that has blossomed into a real reach into the inmost areas of what it means to be human and to follow God. One of the areas of interest that has caught my attention is the human condition and the way that we relate to each other.

The following is an excerpt from the book Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzales.

Cox (a police officer on a small nature park describing instances of people becoming lost on a piece of land one mile long and three0quarters of a mile wide) went on to describe the astounding failures of mind he had witnessed on this tiny spit of land. He told me about a group he’d found on top of the tallest dune in the park. They had noticed that they could see the Atlantic Ocean to the east and asked Cox if the water to the west was the Pacific. He said he had rescued many people who’d become lost and were unable to think through their panic and recognize that they were only a short walk from a heavily traveled road (you can hear the cars from just about any spot in the park). He told me I’d be surprised by the number of people who ask him how far it is between the mile markers on Highway 158.

Cox seemed to take it all with good humor, but he also seemed a bit in despair of the human condition. Referring to the numerous injuries that occur when people fall while trying to run down the dunes, he said, “Yes, gravity still does apply here, even when you’re on vacation.” He told me that people come here suffering from what he called “a vacation state of mind, where all the old rules are suspended.” I’ve used this phrase since, and I owe the concept to Ranger Cox. When we find ourselves in a jam, we can often trace the cause to our vacation state of mind. “

Since a vacation is coming in the near future, I thought this to be appropriate for a single thought. How do we embrace the joy of being in the moment of “vacation” while at the same time retaining the anchors of a life lived on the planet Earth? Perhaps a better question would be, “If we were living a life fully aware and fully connected with the Source, would we need or even relish a vacation at all?”

Uncertain certainty

For most of my life I sought after control over the various aspects of my life – job, finances, friends, vocation, etc. In each of these and many more I attained a certain amount of what I perceived to be control. The truth is, I have never had control and neither have you, but I can’t argue that there is comfort in the delusion that we have acquired control.

Lately I have found myself in a remarkable place – mentally and spiritually. In seeking to find “the answer” to a number of things, I have come to the realization that the end result of “the answer” is not near as important as the journey I take in seeking. This is counterintuitive to the nth degree, but the investment of time and emotion spent “in search of” something is vastly more valuable than any found answer.

We have a need to seek, find and move on to something new – a form of spiritual ADD – but taking in the moment by moment events in the journey toward an answer reveal themselves as divine stepping stones, not toward The answer, but inward toward the realm of The Kingdom Within.

In the end, I have found that the only thing I can be certain of is the constancy of uncertainty. If I refuse to act unless I have certainty, I will remain immobile and ineffective. The greatest joy is that the pull of Spirit to spirit is stronger than my need for certainty. So on I go in the journey.

The real revelation is that if we are eternal beings, the journey can’t possibly have an end.

Anxiety

I’m a quote fiend, and Thomas Merton is a good victim for me. “Anxiety is the mark of spiritual insecurity.” You may need to read and re-read those words. In general terms, anxiety of any kind stems from two forms of fear. One is the fear of losing control and the other is mistrust of the One to whom you are losing your control.

A repetitive topic here is that of Ego and its negative influence over our inner essence. Ego desires to remain in total control of your life indefinitely. Any fluctuation that may mean a renouncing or relinquishing of any control by your Ego will result in many different reactions. Frustration, guilt, shame, hate, anger and jealousy are just a few.

Specifically when related to spiritual, or as some would call “religious” issues, anxiety is the major symptom of intense insecurity. Another term this could be known as is “I believe it because ‘they’ told me and I haven’t really bothered to check it out myself, but I’m willing to cut friendships, offend family and ostracize myself from other people anyway” syndrome.

Never in all of scripture, both Christian and otherwise, is a follower told to “take someones word for it” in regard to spiritual teaching. Instead most spiritual documents call for a follower to look inside themselves and find the Truth. If the Kingdom was not “within” Christ would have never said so, especially if it was 180 degrees in the “out”. The difficulty is that “within” is a place few of us are willing to enter.

Last week I suggested that we look inside ourselves to begin the process of becoming Aware. The one thing I know is that the first step of peering deep in the crevices of our spirit is the most important. At the portal to our inner self He waits to guide us down and ultimately back up. It has been said that “the journey of a thousand steps begins with just one.” Take that first step within and prepare for the journey of a lifetime!

The Audacity of Gratefulness

OK, so I “borrowed” an adjective from the popular book, The Audacity of Hope by Barak Obama  (there, got all the copyright stuff out of the way). Today, I am embraced by and seeking to embrace more of a sense of gratefulness. It’s not about a particular place or thing or event, but it is coming from a desire to look beyond “my” world and see the great big world that has been given as a gift to all of us.

In our face daily there are plenty of things that we can “not” be grateful for, but when we bypass our own attachment and look around, there is far more to appreciate and be grateful for. I will go so far as to say the greatest thing we can do to open up the path for us to connect more closely to God is to become more grateful. Think about this today and then go put it into action!

What do the words mean to you? How do they make you feel?

Now what does this mean to you ? How does this make you feel?

See the difference in linear and holistic? Linear lets you “know” something; holistic lets you “feel” something. Look around today and see what you notice as linear and holistic, you just might be surprised!

Hyperlinks and life

I’ve wanted to write about this for some time now. The world that exists now did not exist several years ago – both in terms of time and in relation to global mentality. Where we once saw life itself as a line within time, we now see life as a multi-layered experience sandwiched inside of other multi-layered experiences within the hologram of Life.

In any given day you will see hundreds of “hyperlinks” on your computer screen. These “hyperlinks” will take you on a journey to another website and another context based on one word. You can continue to follow “hyperlinks” and end up in an entirely different train of thought than you began with. Years ago this would not only have been impossible, but also frustrating.

We are in the middle of a transformation from living “sequential” to living “holistic”. Where we were once happy to have “just the facts” we now want backgrounds and profiles and histories so that we can see the “whole” problem, person or situation.

This switch in perceived needs is changing the development of the next generations mind structure from an old sequential, rational, linear, left brain approach to an abstract, intuitive, holistic, right brain approach to living.

We can see this in many areas of our world, but none more significant than media.  Both in web, print and video we no longer have just “one thing” to look at and understand. Each advertisement, show, special or informative bit has multiple streams that we can connect and disconnect with at whim. I can watch a show or sports game and simultaneously know scores from other games and highlights of news pertaining to all sports…and if the news is big enough, global events – as they happen in real time.

This has to change the way we connect with one another and the way we perceive real connection in our lives. The way we choose to interact with this new perception will also dramatically effect both our perceived and actual influence in this world.

How far?

I’ve had this though brewing in my mind about the changes that I see going on in life and around the world. There seems to be a shift in both perception and execution of things. Coming off the heels of Sunday’s talk on Awareness, I’ve been having to answer the question I posed to you guys – “How far are you willing to go?” in regard to becoming Aware.

The ultimate truth is that we are here for a purpose and we are here to live in communal respect with both ourselves (self-respect) and respect to the Creator who put us here to begin with. There is a balance between healthy self-respect based on our existence and feeding Ego with “I am what I do, have, etc.”

I think that this is one of the greatest hindrances we have to overcome as we seek to live and Aware life. Voices from the past creep up and tell us that we are not worthy or not good enough or not “this” or “that”, but the truth is that we are who God, the Source, has created us to be. Certainly we may have made decisions that disappointed family and friends, but those decisions did not shock or surprise God. Let that last sentence sink in a bit.

You are a combination of events and spirit that God knew would collide and form the “you” you are now. Look at yourself and know that you are deserving of respect from yourself and worthy of connecting with the great Power of the Universe.

Once we are able to shake the shame and self-loathing fed by our own Egos, our own light will begin to shine brighter not only to ourselves, but to those around us as well.

Independence Day

It’s the fourth again, and with that comes some different kind of feelings around our country. For some they immediately think of the wars going on and have either a positive or negative reaction. For others there is a sense of patriotism – the flag, belonging etc.

Today, I can’t say that any of those emotions have “grabbed” me, yet. I haven’t seen any parades or lit any fireworks, but a sense of interdependence rather than Independence is what has me now.

I am more connected to the space around me now than ever before. That sense of connectedness probably has to do with the talk I’ll deliver Sunday on Awareness, but I hope it will last longer and continue further than Sunday.

To release Independence and individuality and “I’ll do it my own way” to interdependence on the Central Force of the Universe and simply allow myself to flow with the waves of creative energy – not striving against it or pushing it forward brings with it a renewed freedom. Not an easy thing to do either. There is the constant tug to control things and “do” what I’m expected to “do”. However, when we allow our “need to be in control” ego’s to sink and our true self to rise to the surface. We come to the surface with a new vision – a new way of “seeing”.

I don’t want to go to far into what some would call “never, never land”, but the best way I can describe it is the way movie companies have remastered old films. They show the old and new versions side by side and the new version shows more color, clarity and details. That’s what happens when we become “Aware” of the world around us and really “see” with new eyes. One thing is for certain, once you have seen things in their renewed brilliance, you don’t want to go back.
