the margins

margin.jpg

I have always been struck by the fact that Jesus was drawn to people who were in the margins of society. His focus tended to be on those who were off the center, or even “off the grid”. It wasn’t as though he happened to see them and went over to them. In many cases he deliberately sought them out. He didn’t talk to them after he felt guilty for not talking to them. In stark contrast to our first reactions to those different than ourselves, he went to them as though he had never entertained the thought of passing them by.

I wish I could say that I have never passed people by – but I have. I have seen people, but been busy with something and have walked by. I have seen people and hoped they didn’t look at me so I wouldn’t feel guilty about not talking to them. I wish I could say that every needy face I have seen was respected and responded to, but I can’t. Why am I drawn to the glittery center and Christ to the margins? Why does centrality suit me, but the edges suited Him?

More than anything this year I want to become the friend of the margins. I want to gaze into the face of the marginalized and see myself in their eyes. I want to respond and “do” for them what Christ “did”. I want a real palpable love to come forth for them and when it does, for it to change me.

The Big Goal

February 1, 2008

Alright, today I’m making a big goal. My intent is to write each day. No every other day, or once in a while, but each and every day. I’ve wanted to do this for a while, but haven’t felt I was up to it. So here we go.

becoming

Many times we live our lives with a focus on the “present”. We live in the “now”. I think that it is important to have a balanced approach to the life we live. I also think that in turning out focus to the present we tend to lose sight of the future. I am most definitly a futurist. I like to poder and think about the things that are coming. I love to examine current culture and try to determine where trends are going. In this effort I have been successful, but have also missed some big things.

The point of today is simply to look ahead and have a plan. We need to decide what we want to “become” and then plan our “becoming”. If we live in a happenstance way, we risk missing some of the wonderful experiences of life. To have a plan, execute it and see the things that once only existed in your mind suddenly be the things you are seeing with your eyes is a great moment. The pleasure and confidence that are created when we plan, pursue and produce an idea can only be understood in the “doing”.

These are the experiences and feelings God desires us to entertain and feel. In the creation of a plan and its execution, we join with the Creator and can, in a small way, experience with him the joy of creativity. Don’t say you can’t do it, start today to make your tomorrows “become” and not just “happen”.

Watching Moses

January 7, 2008

I love the Old Testament stories of Moses. He led the children of Israel through many disheartening situations; he delt with revolt and rebellion; but through it all he eventually took them where he had wanted to take them for many years. At the end of his life, he ended up only seeing the Promised Land.

I believe that this could be a parallel to what many in the religious community are experiencing. We have a tendency, at least in America, to consume. We buy things we don’t need because we are told we “need” them, but we know we really don’t have any need or use for them. The same is true for spiritual experience. We have become “spiritual consumers”. We want to feel something or hear something or be given something, but our response, most often, is not to let these things flow out of us to others. By in large we simply consume more; in effect wasting spiritual experience for the sake of self-gratification.

Don’t get me wrong, spiritual experience is wonderful, but if it leads to nothing more than an over active appetite for more of the same, I fear we have missed the point of these experiences. If anything we should walk away from these experiences knowing how much we are all connected in the spirit, not with a singular point of view that amplifies our self view. When we approach the spiritual with an attitude of emptiness in order to be filled, we experience the truth. If we come to experience and then use the experience to lift ourselves, we have made a mistake.

These experiences, if they are true, lead us closer to God. As we near Him we embrace the oneness of spiritual things. When we abandon the self, we embrace our real self. “To live, we must die.” I do not intend to simply watch the great things of God, I intend to be actively involved with them. I hope that you too will desire to truly experience and not simply consume.

Happy New Year!

January 1, 2008

This year has brought the beginning of this blog and an awareness of the influence of words. I can’t wait to see what 2008 holds and where this journey takes us!

Christmas 2007….countdown to ’08

December 25, 2007

small-happy-holidays.jpg

Well, we’re having a good time in Florida for phase two of Christmas. We started out Saturday and then went through the 3 services on Sunday. We had Christmas “unplugged”. The focus was on the opposite aspects of Christmas. We opened with a room full of blow-up Christmas yard decoration singing six or seven Christmas songs like, The Christmas Song and A Holly Jolly Christmas. Afterward we shifted into focusing on the fact that we are loved by God, and that He wants us to celebrate and imitate Him!

And on top of that we also celebrate that the great people of Lifepoint gave over $6000 to World Vision to help in areas as vast as soccer balls to chickens and ducks.

Hear is hoping that you have the greatest Christmas experience this year can bring!

Happy Thanksgiving!

This Thanksgiving was a great time with family – and food.

2 Smoked Boston Butts
3 smoked small turkeys
1 large 3o something pound turkey
2 large beef briskets
1 ham
1 fried turkey
not to mention all the “fixins”

Lot of food, lot of family and a lot of good time together.

Stepping Away from Ordinary

November 8, 2007

Corona has a tag-line that says, “Miles away from ordinary”. That thought struck me today. As we live our lives – what are we living for. We could say family, country, God, etc. Really though, what are we living for?

The last thing I want to be is ordinary. Not because ordinary is bad, but because we all are different. I want to live a life that celebrates the differentness we all share. Instead of cozying up close to Ordinary, I want to be “Miles Away from Ordinary”.

My Birthday!

October 31, 2007

happy-birthday.jpg

Hooray – it’s my birthday. Yes, another year has past, but I have to say that I’m looking forward to next year as though it could be my best so far. I’m not saying that in a cliche kind of way, but with vigor. Never more have I felt more focused and more in tune with myself.

At the same time I know that there will be many changes ahead as well. With change comes a sense of wonder. Wonder about what will come next, and what will be the outcomes. I have written some of the things down that I want to accomplish in this next year. Some are small; some are huge, but all can and I think will be done as my next year draws to a close.

However, for now…..we celebrate!

starting off

October 2, 2007

There has to be a beginning to everything – so here’s this one. I know that in the coming days a lot will be discussed about a host of topics. I have been prompted to begin an ongoing discussion, and I think the time is right.

Right now most of the conversation will be focused at the team at Lifepoint Church. They work hard each week to make church relevant and accessable. The next few weeks will take some gearing up, but the reward will be huge!

So hang on and remember to do “Whatever It Takes”!
